Salta and Humahuaca

We had one of our most scenic bus ride from San Pedro de Atacama to Salta, and from Salta to Humahuaca. The journey unfolded through majestic mountains. There wasn’t many people taking this route, we took the front seat of the upper deck of the bus, and sit back to enjoy the panoramic vistas that seemed straight out of a postcard.

The color of nature

The breathtaking mountain formation in Humahuaca, known for its stunning array of vibrant colors, is a result of millions of years of geological processes and natural phenomena. The Quebrada de Humahuaca, located in the Jujuy Province of Argentina, showcases a unique landscape that has been shaped by tectonic movements, erosion, sedimentation, and the interplay of various minerals.

The multi-hued layers of the mountains are primarily composed of sedimentary rocks that have accumulated over millennia. The varying colors, ranging from deep reds and oranges to vibrant purples and greens, are a testament to the different types of minerals present in the rock formations. Iron oxide, copper, sulfur, and other minerals contribute to the stunning array of colors that paint the mountains in this region.

Tectonic forces have also played a significant role in shaping the landscape. The gradual movement of the Earth’s crust has caused the rocks to fold, tilt, and uplift, creating the dramatic geological features that are visible today. Erosion by wind and water over millions of years has further sculpted the mountains, revealing the intricate layers and colors that captivate visitors from around the world. Read more here.

A 20-Hour Odyssey: Salta to Mendoza

Undeterred by distance, we embraced a marathon bus ride from Salta to Mendoza, a pilgrimage through Argentina’s vast heartland.

Mendoza

Mendoza‘s international wine fame originate from its ideal climate, altitude variations, ancient irrigation system, and diverse grape varietals. Winemaking expertise, including the iconic Malbec, adds to its allure. To me Malbec tastes a bit on the strong side, it is famous for its rich flavors of dark fruits, cocoa and spices. Adapted to high-altitude terroir, it boasts smooth tannins and a distinctive minerality. It surely goes well with the Argentinian steaks.

Buenos Aires

After Mendoza we set our compass for Chile, see here for the article, and Patagonia, check out more of our trips here. We planned Bueno Aires as the last stop of our trip, due to the convenience that the city’s vibrancy and globalization brought.

The city’s vibrant energy resonated with us, amplified by the warmth and hospitality of the people we encountered along the way. Amidst the rhythm of tango and the aromatic wafts of local cuisine, we discovered that Buenos Aires was more than a destination; it was a tapestry of diverse cultures woven seamlessly into the urban fabric.

The Recoleta Cemetery stood as a testament to the city’s history, each mausoleum a window into a bygone era. And as we wandered through its alleys, we felt the heartbeat of Buenos Aires echoing through the stories etched in stone. But perhaps what moved us most was the enduring love for Evita Perón. I too was moved by her story, her legacy echoed in the streets, a symbol of strength, compassion, and unwavering devotion to the people.

Iguazu Falls

Both the Brazilian and Argentine sides offer unique perspectives. The Brazilian side showcases the panoramic majesty, while the Argentine side allows you to get up close to the falls. With limited time, we chose to visit the Brazilian side, meanwhile collecting an extra stamp from a new country for my passport.

The “Devil’s Throat” is the most iconic and powerful section of Iguazu Falls. A massive U-shaped cascade, it’s a mesmerizing sight as water rushes over the precipice, engulfing the surroundings in mist and producing a surreal visual effect.

As we reflect upon our Argentinian adventure, we can’t help but be overwhelmed by the vivid tapestry of experiences woven into the very fabric of this captivating country. It is a land where nature’s brush strokes meet the passion of its people, and where every step reveals a new shade of beauty. Argentina, a masterpiece waiting to be discovered.
